A conversation with RNS Director Dr. Nancy Shackelford

My research covers restoration ecology, stats, data, plants, mites, and landscape ecology. Though I found restoration on accident, I believe it's the most hopeful, useful pathway in the midst of our current ecological woes. My passion is to make restoration outcomes more predictable by bringing together knowledge through meta-analysis and synthesis, and by applying generalizable ecological concepts to the successes and failures we see on the ground.

I find it inspiring that you are working towards making restoration outcomes more predictable.

We work on the traditional territories of the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples. The Songhees and Xʷsepsəm/Esquimalt, as well as the W̱SÁNEĆ peoples have deep, historical relationships with the land that continue to this day. Most of our group are uninvited settlers here. We are committed to deepening our understanding of how we can assist in the movement of reconciliation, dismantling the systems that continue to cause harm, and honoring the traditional stewards that have shaped this land.
